Popliteal artery injuries are a severe complication that can occur in motorcycle accidents. Let’s explore the prevalence and significance of these injuries:

  1. Prevalence:
    • Popliteal artery injuries are relatively common in the context of motorcycle accidents.
    • They account for up to 20% of peripheral vascular injuries1.
    • A retrospective study conducted in Vietnam between January 2018 and June 2020 found that approximately 1.8% of patients with injured lower extremities suffered from additional nerve trauma, including popliteal artery injury1.
    • The study also highlighted that the peroneal nerve is the most frequently involved neural structure in such cases1.
    • Notably, peripheral nerve damage was mainly associated with motorbike accidents (31.2%) and car accidents (30.7%)2.
