April 7, 2025 — World Health Day marks the launch of a year-long campaign focused on maternal and newborn health. Titled “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” the campaign urges governments and health communities to strengthen efforts to prevent avoidable maternal and infant deaths and to prioritize the long-term health and well-being of women.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners will also provide essential information to support safe pregnancies, healthy births, and better postnatal care.
Ensuring Every Woman and Child Survives and Thrives
This is a crucial mission. Sadly, every year, nearly 300,000 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes, over 2 million newborns die within their first month, and nearly 2 million more are stillborn. This amounts to approximately one preventable death every 7 seconds.
Current trends show that nearly 4 out of 5 countries are off-track to meet the 2030 maternal mortality targets, and 1 in 3 will fail to meet newborn mortality reduction goals.
Listening to Women and Supporting Families
Every woman and family deserves high-quality care that supports their physical and emotional well-being before, during, and after birth.
Healthcare systems must evolve to handle the wide range of issues affecting maternal and newborn health — from obstetric complications to mental health concerns, non-communicable diseases, and access to family planning.
Maternal and Child Health — The Foundation of a Healthy Future
The health of mothers and newborns forms the backbone of healthy families and strong communities. A safe and thriving start to life ensures a hopeful future for all of us.
