In the Heart of ludhianar, at the esteemed Blood Centre of CMC&H, a remarkable event unfolds from the 2nd to the 8th of May, 2024. Dr.Gurpreet Kaur Thiara
Head of Department Transfusion Medicine MBBS,MD Spearheads a blood donation drive in observance of World Thalassemia Day 2024.

Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder, casts a long shadow over the lives of many, necessitating frequent and lifelong blood transfusions. In light of this, the Blood Centre becomes a hub of altruism, where the community can contribute to a lifeline for those grappling with the disorder.

Dr. Kaur, a venerated figure in the medical community, extends a heartfelt invitation to all: “Your participation is not merely a donation; it’s a gift of life, hope, and a chance for thalassemia patients to thrive. Your generosity is the catalyst for change.”

The drive promises to be a testament to the power of community and the spirit of giving. As donors roll up their sleeves, they aren’t just part of a campaign; they’re part of a movement that echoes the theme of this year’s Thalassemia Day: “Empowering Lives, Embracing Progress.”

So, let us rally together, for our collective efforts today can forge a brighter tomorrow for those touched by thalassemia. Join us at the Blood Centre, and let your kindness flow.

This article aims to inspire and inform the public about the importance of the blood donation drive and the profound impact it can have on the lives of thalassemia patients. It’s a call to action that resonates with the spirit of World Thalassemia Day 2024.

.Dr.Gurpreet Kaur Thiara  Head of Department Transfusion Medicine ,World Thalassemia Day is observed on May 8 every year. It aims to create awareness about thalassemia, a genetic condition affecting millions worldwide. In India, over 10,000 new cases of thalassemia are diagnosed annually, making the country the Thalassemia capital of the world1. Thalassemia is a hereditary disease that affects many children in their infancy. Parents who are usually asymptomatic can be carriers of this disease and have a 25% chance of passing it to their children1.

 Challenges for Thalassemia Patients:

Safe and Timely Blood Transfusions: Thalassemia patients require frequent blood transfusions, and the annual requirement of packed red cells in India alone is about 2 million units. However, the demand for safe blood far outstrips the supply, leaving many families struggling to obtain necessary blood for their children1.

Stem Cell Transplants: While blood transfusions are essential, they come with challenges and risks. A successful blood stem cell transplant, which can cure thalassemia, depends on a perfect HLA tissue match. Unfortunately, only 30% of patients who need transplants have a fully HLA-matched donor in their family, and the rest depend on an unrelated donor1.

Theme for Thalassemia Day 2023: Be Aware. Share. Care. It’s high time to raise awareness about the disease and its treatment options. Individuals with thalassemia and their families face significant challenges accessing quality healthcare and treatment. Let’s work together to improve awareness, availability of safe blood, and access to curative treatments like stem cell transplantation for those in need1.

If you’re able, consider participating in the Blood Donation Camp at BLOOD CENTRE CMC&H from 2nd to 8th May, 2024, between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. Your contribution can make a difference in saving lives!
