He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi after experiencing a sudden loss of consciousness and was declared dead despite resuscitation efforts.
Dr. Singh, an esteemed economist educated at Oxford University, played a pivotal role in liberalizing India’s economy during his tenure as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996. His reforms opened India’s economy to global competition, leading to substantial economic growth.
In 2004, he became India’s first Sikh Prime Minister, leading the country for two consecutive terms until 2014. His leadership was marked by significant achievements, including a historic civil nuclear agreement with the United States, although his second term faced challenges due to corruption scandals and slower economic growth.
Dr. Singh’s personal integrity and humility earned him respect across the political spectrum. Following his passing, leaders from various parties, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, have expressed their condolences and lauded his contributions to the nation.
