“Seeing the Future Clearly – DMC&H Brings Vision Care to Every Child’s Doorstep!”
Ludhiana –Punjabiheadline (H S KITTY) A free Pediatric Eye Screening Camp was successfully conducted by Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMC&H), Ludhiana, in collaboration with the Munde Ahmedgarh Welfare Club, at Gandhi School, Ahmedgarh, under the banner of Project ROSHANI—DMC&H’s flagship initiative for community-based eye care.
The camp focused on the early detection of childhood eye disorders, an essential step in preventing visual impairment and promoting lifelong healthy vision. The event was organized under the expert guidance of Dr. Priyanka Arora, Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, DMC&H, and coordinated by Mr. Rakesh Garg, President of the Welfare Club.
A total of 461 children were screened during the camp—261 from Gandhi School and 200 from nearby villages. The screening results revealed:
30 children with squint 
4 cases of pediatric cataract
2 children with ptosis (drooping eyelid)
30 children needing corrective spectacles
Dr. Priyanka Arora emphasized the critical importance of early identification and intervention, noting that such efforts play a vital role in preventing avoidable blindness and ensuring the proper visual development of children during their formative years.
Shri Bipin Gupta, Secretary of the DMC&H Managing Society, reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment, stating, “Through Project ROSHANI, we aim to make specialized eye care accessible to every child, regardless of their background.”
Dr. G.S. Wander, Principal, DMC&H, lauded the initiative and announced that free treatment and spectacles will be provided to the diagnosed children under Project ROSHANI at DMC&H.
Senior faculty including Dr. Bishav Mohan (Chief Cardiologist), Dr. Sandeep Sharma and Dr. Ashwani K. Chaudhary (Medical Superintendents), Dr. Anurag Chaudhary (Professor & Head, Department of Community Medicine), and Dr. S.P. Singh (Incharge, Rural Health Centre, Pohir) appreciated the collaborative outreach. They called it a significant step toward improving community-based pediatric healthcare in rural Punjab.
Dr. Gurvinder Kaur, Professor & Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, DMC&H, commended the team’s outreach efforts and reiterated the department’s commitment to pediatric ophthalmology outreach, especially in underserved and remote areas.
The camp’s success was made possible through the support of dedicated individuals including Ms. Shradha Chawla (a committed philanthropist), and the team of optometrists—Mr. Harsh, Mr. Gautam, Mr. Rahul, Ms. Neha, and Ms. Rooval. Field operations and community mobilization were efficiently handled by Mr. Gurjinder, a community social worker.
This event not only delivered essential vision screening and treatment services to children but also helped raise awareness among parents, teachers, and the local community about the importance of eye health in childhood. It marks yet another impactful milestone in the journey of Project ROSHANI and DMC&H, as they strive to ensure that every child has the right to a clearer, brighter future.
