“Strong Minds, Brave Hearts – Every Child Deserves a Voice!”
By Harmanpreet Kaur
PunjabiHeadlines ( Harmanpreet kaur) Mental health challenges among children and youth are rising at an alarming rate, yet many remain silent due to stigma, fear, or lack of awareness. Anxiety, depression, and emotional distress often go unnoticed, leaving young minds struggling in silence. It’s time to break this silence and create a supportive environment where children feel safe to express their emotions and seek help.
The Reality of Childhood Mental Health
Children experience emotions just as deeply as adults, but they often lack the words to express their struggles. Many children facing mental health issues are dismissed as “moody” or “difficult”, which prevents early intervention. According to studies, one in five children worldwide suffers from a diagnosable mental health disorder, yet nearly 60% do not receive the help they need.
Why Silence is Dangerous
When children and teenagers feel unheard, they start internalizing their pain. This can lead to:
Increased self-isolation and withdrawal
Declining academic performance
Risky behaviors such as substance abuse
In extreme cases, self-harm or suicidal thoughts
Ignoring these signs doesn’t make them disappear—it only pushes young minds further into darkness.
How We Can Break the Silence
1. Educating Parents, Teachers, and Communities
Mental health should be discussed openly at home and in schools.
Training educators and parents to recognize early warning signs can save lives.
2. Encouraging Open Conversations
Create safe spaces where children feel comfortable sharing their feelings.
Normalize seeking help from counselors and professionals.
3. Providing Professional Support
Schools and foster homes must have access to trained Child and Youth Care Workers (CYCWs).
Early intervention through therapy, peer support, and community programs.
4. Ending the Stigma
Mental health is just as important as physical health.
Sharing success stories of recovery can inspire hope and encourage children to speak up.
Final Thoughts: A Call to Action
It’s time to change the narrative. No child should suffer in silence. Whether as parents, teachers, social workers, or community members, we all have a role in breaking the silence and building a future where mental health is a priority for every child.
